Another Year, Another Frenzy

Saturday March 24, 2012

Taking place every April, Script Frenzy is an online event that challenges writers to hunker down and, in just thirty days, hammer out 100 new script pages for any medium - film, television, web series, stage play, radio play, or graphic novel.

After first wanting to take part in Script Frenzy in 2004, I finally dove in last year and succeeded in writing 100 new script pages during April 2011 by completing several short stage plays. Now, that's a perfectly valid Script Frenzy "win", but it still didn't feel quite right.  I like the idea of using Script Frenzy to write a complete first draft of something which will run at least 100 pages, and finishing that first draft during April, no matter how many more pages it takes.

So That's the Plan for This Year

I wasn't thinking about Script Frenzy when a new screenplay idea started tumbling around in my brain in late February, but once I started seeing writers on Twitter mentioning their own plans to take part in the upcoming Frenzy, things started to click.  The idea is for a family film, so having the script come in at 100 pages would be about right (screenplays generally work out to a page-a-minute of screen time, and family films usually run under the two-hour/120 page mark).  The timing is pretty good as well, since a first draft of this script requires a little research, but not a lot, so that's what I've been doing this month.

The Idea So Far

I don't like writing too much about my ideas when they're in the very early stages, so I won't be outlining the plot here or on my Script Frenzy user profile.  I will say that the idea is:
  • A live-action family film (targeted at ages 9-12, but should be suitable for both older and younger alike)
  • Has a hint of both adventure and sci-fi, but is really more of a coming of age (I think - the focus could shift as I write!)
  • Is set in Eastern Canada
  • And while it will certainly have some fun parts in it, I'm leaning towards a more serious tone overall (think E.T. or The Iron Giant rather than Spy Kids)

And I'm Already Planning to Procrastinate

Although I won't be posting details of the script itself, I will try to blog about the process and my progress - hopefully only after I've finished my pages for the day, but we'll see how that goes.

Of course I'm sure I'll also be wasting some time in the Script Frenzy forums, so if you're taking part this year, keep an eye out for me under the username GreasySpoon, and feel free to add me as a writing buddy.  :)
