This week there are some opportunities for Canadian youth interested in cooking, the environment, playwriting and orchestral music.
2010 EatRight Ontario Kids Recipe Challenge
• For Ontario students in Grades 1-6
• Deadline December 3rd, 2010
The EatRight Ontario website invites you to "create an original, kid-friendly recipe for either school day lunches or after school snacks". Entries will be judged on nutrition, taste, originality, easy preparation and your response to the question, "Why would kids like this recipe?". What you can win is vague, but according to the official rules page prizes "...may include any or all of: Gift certificates for groceries, books, music, etc; Cookbooks; Cooking equipment; Clothing; Recognition on the EatRight Ontario website".
ENVIRONMENT
TD FEF Go Green Challenge
• For legal residents of Canada who are a graduate or undergradute student at one of the approved Canadian colleges or universities
• Deadline January 21, 2011
Form a team of two to four students and make a video identifying and offering a solution to a sustainability issue facing your post-secondary institution. There are big prizes for the TD Friends of the Environment Go Green Challenge, including paid summer internships for the 1st place team, team cash prizes ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, and support for on-campus environmental activities.
Canon Envirothon
• For Canadian and US high school students
• Deadline and fees for registration vary
This is a big competition, which can hardly be summed up in a few lines here. Teams of five youth from one organization (school, community group etc) can enter a knowledge-based competition at the regional level, vying for a chance to compete in the big summer event. In 2011 the major competiton is in Sackville, New Brunswick from July 24th - 29th. (Live in New Brunswick? There's also a need for volunteers.) If you and your friends are environmentally-minded and ready for a challenge, browse envirothon.org for general information, then find your local program by state or province for details on how to get involved. A registration fee will apply, and an adult teacher/advisor is required.
ARTS & CULTURE
Write from the Hip
• For female emerging playwrights aged 18-29
• Deadline December 3rd, 2010
Toronto's Nightwood Theatre invites applications to join the year-long Write from the Hip program, which offers mentoring, writing seminars, readings and other creative support to young women writing a new full-length play. The 2011 program will begin in April with bi-weekly Monday night meetings taking place in Toronto during the first four months and other sessions scheduled throughout the rest of the year.
National Youth Orchestra of Canada
• For Canadian residents who will be between the ages of 14* and 28 on June 19th, 2011
• Deadline for applications is December 1st, 2010 (late applications may be accepted for a larger fee if audition spots are still available)
Young musicians are invited to audition for one of the 80 to 100 spots available in the summer program. Auditions will take place in various cities around Canada, with audition dates being emailed out in mid-December. An application fee ($100 between November 15th and December 1st) is required. Visit nyoc.org for details, application form and audition repertoire.
*Note that while 14- and 15-year-olds are welcome to audition for the experience, the NYOC website states that the minimum age for participation in the NYOC is usually 16, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
