This Saturday's opportunities are all for creative youth ready to express themselves in words and video. Don't forget to check the bottom of the post for previously mentioned opportunities that are still open to submissions.

The Fraser Institute Essay Contest
• For Canadian and international students
• Deadline June 1st, 2011
High school, undergraduate and high school students are invited to answer the question "Is Capitalism dead?" in essays of 1,000-1,500 words. There's a $1000 first place prize, $500 for second place and an extra $250 prize available only to high school students (although exceptional high school entries are equally eligible for 1st or 2nd place). Winners of the Fraser Institute Essay Contest may also have their essay published in a Fraser Institute journal.

The James Bartleman Aboriginal Youth Creative Writing Award
• For Aboriginal students 18 and under, enrolled in school in Ontario
• Nomination deadline May 31st, 2011 (annual award)
Up to six students may be awarded a certificate and $2,500 for an original piece of creative writing such as a short story, poem, essay, play, or song. Winners will also be brought to Toronto with two family members to attend an awards ceremony. The James Bartleman Aboriginal Youth Creative Writing Award is named after the first Aboriginal Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, and is given out through the Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat.

Obsidian Theatre Company - The Shards Program
• For students 15-23 who identify as a member of the black Diaspora
• Deadline December 20th, 2010
This is a no-experience-necessary playwright unit based in Toronto, intended for "energetic and enthusiastic" black youth. Selected participants will work with theatre professionals to develop writing skills. Interested youth must be attending school and be able to commit to meetings from January to April 2011. Part of Obsidian Theatre Company's youth programs, the Shards positions are paid.

Olive Garden - Pasta Tales Essay Contest
• For Canadian and US students in grades 1-12
• Deadline January 21st, 2011
The Olive Garden Pasta Tales Essay Contest invites students to write 50-250 word submissions describing “how furthering your education beyond high school will help make your dreams come true”. The grand prize is a $2,500 savings bond and a trip to New York City; age category prizes include $500 savings bonds and dinner at your local Olive Garden.

Kaleidoscope Real World Video Challenge
• For Canadians (or landed immigrants) 18 and under
• Deadline March 31st, 2011
The Kaleidoscope Real World Video Challenge invites videos up to 5 minutes in length showcasing what you are doing to help change the world. Winners will receive a video camera (or equivalent cash prize) and a trip to Ottawa in September 2011 to participate in a national youth conference.
