Youth Opportunities - December 4th, 2010

Saturday December 4th, 2010

[UPDATE: It may be useful to browse these old listings as many programs are annual, but for more current contests and competitions, head to the Youth Opportunities page.]

I'm just sneaking this in under the wire for a Saturday update! Many of this week's opportunities for youth are centered in Toronto and focus on arts or the environment - or both! Oh, and there's a chance to get a word in edgewise with the UN Security Council...

National Shakespeare Youth Festival
• For Canadian Secondary school students
• Early bird deadline has passed but registration is still open
Run by Shakespeare in Action, the National Shakespeare Youth Festival invites students form across Canada to creatively respond to any one of Shakespeare's plays using performance, dance, design or film. Outstanding entries from in-school festivals may move on to the National Festival in Toronto. For videos of some previous entries, visit the Shakespeare in Action blog.

Toronto Youth Shorts Film Festival Seeks Interns
• Deadline is January 3rd, 2011
The Toronto Youth Shorts Film Festival is looking for volunteer interns to fill the part-time roles of Outreach Coordinator, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Special Events Coordinator and Technical Coordinator.

The Poetic License Contest for Youth
• For Canadians in grades 7-12
• Deadline January 15th, 2011
Through the youth project YoungPoets.ca, the League of Canadian Poets invites submissions of poems 50 lines or less in two age categories: Junior (grades 7-9) and Senior (grades 10-12). There will be three winners in each category with prizes that include $350 for first place, $300 for second and $250 for third. There is no fee to submit. Also explore YoungPoets.ca for forums, articles, the Re:Verse e-zine and more.

Everyday Heroes Festival
• Any Canadian-based filmmakers
• Deadline March 1st, 2011
Although not strictly a youth festival, the limited technical requirements of the Everyday Heroes Festival may be ideal for student filmmakers. The festival seeks silent, one-minute mini-documentaries about people who are "going green and doing good". Finalists will screen on the video terminals inside Toronto's TTC stations and category prizes will be awarded in: Activism, Education, Conservation and Great Ideas.

The Great EcoKids Challenge
• Canadians, Grades K-8
• Deadline April 29th, 2011
From Earth Day Canada, the Great EcoKids Challenge sets out to recognize projects organized by classes, extra-curricular clubs or other youth groups that are making a positive impact on the environment. An adult leader must be the one to submit the project for consideration.

Voices of a New Generation Challenge
• Open to anyone between the ages of 13 and 21
• Deadline December 14th, 2010
The US Mission to the United Nations is accepting videos up to one minute long or written submissions up to 250 words that answer the question "What is the most vital challenge to international peace and security facing your generation?". Selected entries from the Voices of a New Generation Challenge will be "incorporated into the agenda of the Security Council event on December 21". No prizes for this one, just a unique chance to be heard.
