Youth Opportunities - Sunday May 1st, 2011

Sunday May 1, 2011

[UPDATE: It may be useful to browse these old listings as many programs are annual, but for more current contests and competitions, head to the Youth Opportunities page.]

Every weekend I post about current youth opportunities that are open to submissions from Ontario residents, which includes many contests and competitions open to youth across Canada and the US. Please note I'm not attesting to the legitimacy or quality of anything listed here - read the fine print carefully and make your own judgement call, especially if a submission fee or creative rights are involved!
Well, I'm officially changing the Youth Opportunities info on the sidebar to say that I post on "weekends" since between last week and this week the Saturday thing clearly isn't always happening (at least this week I have a good excuse - Script Frenzy, which I'll write more about shortly).

Earlier this month I wrote about the Student Vote program and how much I love the idea. For anyone who's interested, the Globe and Mail had an article this week on the program, "Mock election attracts 'engaged' students" by Tamara Baluja. No results yet though - those won't released until the real election is over, too.
Now, onto the two new youth opportunities for this week!

Ontario Stewardship Rangers
• Open to Ontario residents born in 1994 and enrolled in school
• Deadline Friday May 6th, 2011
The Ontario Stewardship Ranger program is a once-in-a-lifetime summer employment opportunity - once in a lifetime because it's only open to individuals born in a single year. Stewardship Ranger's work for eight weeks on projects supporting the natural environment in their local communities (The Ontario Ranger program offers live-and-work camp opportunities, but the 2011 deadline for that program has already passed). There are Stewardship Ranger positions available for 20 community projects this year, so if you're 16/17 and love nature, check the list quick - the deadline is this Friday!
